Crocodile Falls
“Visiting Ethiopia’s Awash Falls whilst it was in full flood was an experience that filled my senses. I could feel the
thundering of water resonating in my chest, the cold spray hitting me in the face and the churning water filling my
vision. To capture the scene, I was looking for a foreground element to add context and scale. I couldn’t believe my
luck when I spotted this crocodile resting on the riverbank just below the falls; the prehistoric predator completed the
primordial scene perfectly. I painstakingly inched towards it, not wanting to make any sudden movements that might
frighten it into the water. I got as close as I dared, set down my tripod and took this photo with a wide-angle lens and
slow shutter speed to blur the water. Eventually, the crocodile slipped away into the river and I was left wondering how
any animal could survive in that tumultuous torrent.”
